Information for patients
The Gastroenterology Department provides outpatient and inpatient endoscopic services including gastroscopy and colonoscopy at Fremantle Hospital. The department operates as a combined Fremantle Hospital and Fiona Stanley Hospital gastroenterology service.
A centralised waitlist for endoscopic procedures in the South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) ensures the timely delivery of endoscopic services.
Information for health professionals
All referrals for endoscopic procedures for both Fiona Stanley and Fremantle Hospitals are to be submitted using specified forms (external site). All forms are to be submitted to the specified fax number contained on the referral form.
All outpatient consultations are provided at Fiona Stanley Hospital.

We undertake a substantial amount of original research, primarily in the fields of liver disease and inflammatory bowel diseases. Current projects are looking at disordered iron metabolism, liver cancer and liver injury, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic viral hepatitis, non-invasive liver imaging, biomarker discovery, endoscopic ultrasound and colonic carcinogenesis.

Education and training
We provide opportunities for basic, advanced and post-fellowship clinical training in Gastroenterology. We are part of the Perth-wide training scheme in Gastroenterology which rotates advanced trainees between Fremantle, Sir Charles Gairdner and Royal Perth Hospitals. Applicants can apply for advanced training via the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (external site) website. Basic training and post-fellowship appointments are made directly by the hospital.
In 2015 there will be two advanced trainee and two fellowship positions available through the combined Fremantle Hospital and Fiona Stanley Hospital Gastroenterology Service.
