Paper records are a thing of the past at Fremantle Hospital with BOSSnet Digital Medical Record (DMR) system now in operation.

After 12 months of planning, all inpatient wards, outpatient and community services, day patient areas, theatres and procedural areas are using digital medical records.

Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group (FSFHG) ICT Program Manager Jonathan Langdale said the change supported continuity of care across FSFHG and improved communication across disciplines.

“With patients being transferred between Fiona Stanley and Fremantle hospitals daily, the DMR standardises clinical access to a patient’s medical record and medical history,” Jonathan said.

“Allied health staff, nurses and doctors from both hospital sites can immediately access and enter details into a patient’s digital medical record, read previous admissions and outpatient notes, and access some procedure and investigation results.

“The DMR will help us work more efficiently and effectively without the delays and risks associated with copying, storing and retrieving paper records across both sites.”

Jonathan said getting ‘BOSSnet-ready’ was an enormous hospital-wide effort, with more than 1 000 staff undertaking training to familiarise themselves with the new program.

“Fremantle is an older hospital, so significant infrastructure upgrades were required to accommodate the implementation of BOSSnet,” he said.

The rollout required 35 new workstations on wheels, 55 PCs, 654 widescreen monitors and four enterprise grade document scanners. More than 233 paper forms and 66 e-forms were reviewed during harmonisation.

Feedback from staff had been very positive.

“The hard work and commitment shown by all staff, particularly the project team and BOSSnet champions, has made this significant change a success,” Jonathan said.
