Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy services at Fiona Stanley and Fremantle hospitals support people to participate in the daily activities they want, need and are expected to do so they can lead satisfying and meaningful lives.

Our teams consist of occupational therapists, administration and Patient Equipment Centre staff.

Working closely with patients, their families and/or carers, our staff focus on enabling our patients to maximise their ability to complete daily tasks and live their best possible life. These daily tasks can include self-care, domestic, community based, leisure and work activities.

Our occupational therapy staff support patients, families and carers through:

  • assessing a patient’s self-care, home duties, performance at work or school, driving, leisure and socialisation skills
  • training in self-care and home management skills to increase independence
  • physical rehabilitation to improve coordination, strength and movement for daily living activities
  • hand therapy, scar management and splinting
  • cognitive (thinking) and memory assessment and retraining
  • the development of skills to manage mental health symptoms and increase coping with day-to-day activities
  • assessment and modification of the home environment to improve safety and independence
  • prescription of, and education in using, assistive technology and equipment to assist function
  • advising family and carers on strategies to enable the independence of their loved one.
