Hand Service
The Hand Service at Fremantle Hospital offers a hand trauma and an elective hand surgery service. It is staffed by orthopaedic and plastic surgeons, nursing staff, occupational therapists and physiotherapists.
The trauma service cares for injuries including:
- flexor and extensor tendon injuries
- fractures
- nail bed injuries
- hand lacerations
- fingertip amputations.
Theatre sessions are provided for patients needing surgery. Non-surgical and post-surgical care is provided by physiotherapists and occupational therapists in consultation with the medical staff.
As we are a short stay service, we are unable to offer surgery for patients requiring extensive anaesthetic or surgeries requiring more than 2 hours in theatre.
The elective service looks after patients with elective hand conditions including carpal tunnel syndrome, ganglions, and Dupuytren’s disease.
Referrals
For general practitioners or emergency physicians wishing to access the trauma services, please phone the hospital switchboard on 9431 3333 and ask for the Hand Service nurse coordinator. A referral should be electronically sent (via eReferral) or faxed to the department and copy given to the patient.
Outpatient elective referrals should be submitted through the Central Referral Service (external site).
